In 1977, the 57th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, stationed at Keflavik Air Base in Iceland, operated the McDonnell F-4C Phantom II as part of NATO's air defense mission. Tasked with intercepting and identifying Soviet aircraft probing the North Atlantic airspace, the 57th FIS maintained constant alert status.
